$500,000 Parks Matching Grant Under Financial Scrutiny
The department serves nearly 8,000 rec-center participants a year, brings in close to $400,000 in revenue, and has landed almost $3 million in grants so park projects don't fall on taxpayers. Priorities include Lake Park improvements, Heritage Park Phase Two, Ed Herring Park, and tennis/pickleball upgrades.
Unsafe tennis courts closed temporarily
The town's tennis courts are riddled with potholes and have been unfunded for years; the board voted 3-1 to close them temporarily while a renovation plan (about $45,000) is developed for October.
Municipal Park Walking Trail Repair
The park walking trail has been blocked off for two years due to stormwater failure. The board set aside $430,000 from the stormwater fund so repairs can go to bid quickly — Commissioner Hamilton wanted to wait for actual bids.
Golf course mowing — buy a tractor?
Commissioner Mitchell reported a growing fleet of tractor-trailers parking at the golf course lot, blocking Golfview where families and kids cross, despite a town ordinance banning commercial vehicles in residential areas. The manager noted there's no full-service truck stop in Cumberland County, which drives the problem. The mayor directed code enforcement and police to contact the property owner.
Senior and recreation program funding
Registration grew by four teams, forcing the town to buy more practice time at the T.J. Robinson Life Center, one of four facilities already in use. Officials said the town is behind national park standards and repeated calls for a second recreation facility.
Senior resource center conversion
The town plans its own $18 million recreation center but wants $4 million from the state to retrofit an existing building into a multi-use senior and community resource center. Seniors asked for their own space apart from youth programs, and the building could serve as a warming station in emergencies.
Sports complex: golf course vs. Hodges property
The board voted 3-1 to revisit putting baseball fields back on the golf course, which already has water and sewer, instead of the Hodges property that would need millions in utility extensions. Residents near the golf course have long opposed development there.
